Residency by Investment

Two distinct pathways to permanent residency in one of Latin America's most strategically positioned economies.

Panama offers a territorial tax system, a dollarized economy, and a stable banking environment that has attracted internationally mobile families and investors for decades. For clients seeking permanent residency outside of Europe, Panama represents one of the most practical and cost-efficient options available today.

The Case For It

Strategic positioning, real economy.

Panama sits at the intersection of two oceans, two continents, and a uniquely territorial tax system. Decades of stability, dollarization, and a banking sector built around international clients have made it the default Latin American jurisdiction for high-net-worth families seeking residency outside Europe. The two visa pathways available — Friendly Nations and Qualified Investor — accommodate both eligibility-based and capital-based profiles.

Friendly Nations Visa

Available to citizens of 50+ qualifying countries including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and most of Europe. From $200,000 in Panamanian real estate or a fixed-term bank deposit (3-year minimum). Two-year provisional residency followed by permanent residency. Path to citizenship at year five.

Qualified Investor Visa

Open to all nationalities. Permanent residency granted in 30–45 days through a $300,000 unencumbered real estate investment held for five years. Government fees: $5,000 National Treasury contribution and $5,000 repatriation deposit. One visit every two years to maintain status.

Territorial Tax System

Panama taxes only Panama-source income. Foreign investment income, capital gains, and business profits earned outside Panama are not subject to Panamanian taxation — a significant structural advantage for internationally mobile families.

Dollarized Economy

The US Dollar is legal tender alongside the Panamanian balboa. No currency conversion, no exchange-rate risk, no foreign-currency banking complexity for American clients.

Eligibility

Two visa pathways. Two profiles.

Friendly Nations — Real Estate

Purchase of Panamanian real estate with a minimum registered value of $200,000. Property may be financed through a local Panamanian institution. Two-year provisional residency issued upon approval, followed by permanent residency.

Qualified Investor — Real Estate

Purchase of Panamanian real estate free of liens with a minimum value of $300,000. Property must be held for a minimum of five years. Permanent residency granted within 30–45 days of application.

  • Friendly Nations Visa: citizenship of one of 50+ qualifying nations (US, UK, Canada, Australia, most EU member states).
  • Qualified Investor Visa: open to applicants of any nationality.
  • Verifiable lawful source of investment funds.
  • Clean criminal record across all countries of prior residence (FBI clearance for US applicants).
  • Friendly Nations: $200,000 minimum in qualifying Panamanian real estate or fixed-term bank deposit (three-year minimum).
  • Qualified Investor: $300,000 minimum in unencumbered Panamanian real estate (five-year holding period), plus a $5,000 National Treasury contribution and $5,000 repatriation deposit.
  • Family coverage extends to spouse, dependent children, and dependent parents on a single application.

Frequently Asked

Questions worth answering candidly.

Will I become a Panamanian tax resident?+

Holding Panamanian residency does not automatically create tax residency. Panama operates on a territorial-tax basis — only Panama-source income is taxed at the federal level. For most American clients, residency in Panama does not change their US tax position; US worldwide-income taxation continues to apply. We coordinate with US tax counsel before any restructuring.

How does the Friendly Nations Visa differ from the Qualified Investor Visa?+

Friendly Nations is restricted to citizens of 50+ qualifying countries and accepts $200,000 in real estate or bank deposit. Qualified Investor is open to any nationality but requires $300,000 in unencumbered real estate plus government fees, with much faster processing (30–45 days vs. several months for Friendly Nations). For US citizens, both pathways are available — selection turns on speed vs. cost.

Do I have to live in Panama?+

Neither pathway requires significant physical presence to maintain residency. Qualified Investor requires a single visit every two years; Friendly Nations has comparable minimal-presence rules. For citizenship at year five, meaningful Panamanian residence is required during the qualifying period.

What about banking?+

Panama has one of Latin America's most established international banking sectors. Account opening for residents is straightforward, though due-diligence requirements have tightened in line with global AML standards. We coordinate banking introductions for clients alongside the residency engagement.

Can my family be included?+

Yes. Spouse, dependent children (up to age 25 in qualifying circumstances), and dependent parents are all eligible on a single application. Each family member's documentation is prepared in parallel with the principal applicant's file.
