Talent Visa
Portugal's Talent Visa (Visto para a Procura de Trabalho Qualificado / D3) is the country's most modern residency pathway — designed for highly qualified professionals, founders, researchers, and senior operators whose track record speaks louder than any investment check. For Americans whose human capital exceeds what they wish to deploy abroad, this is the most elegant route to an EU passport.

When talent is the asset, this is the visa.
The Talent Visa rewards accomplishment. If you hold a senior role, an advanced degree, or a credible record as a founder, researcher, or specialist, Portugal will receive you on the strength of who you are — not what you wire.
Unlike investment visas, the Talent Visa requires a €170,000 contribution.
Time on a D3 counts in full toward Portuguese naturalization. Ten years to passport eligibility under the 2026 nationality-law amendment — same as Golden Visa.
Portuguese residents move freely across all 27 EU member states. Citizenship extends that right permanently.
Spouse and dependent children are included in the same family reunification track from the outset.
Who qualifies.
- Senior professionals with verifiable employment history (typically C-suite, partner-level, or specialized leadership roles).
- Founders and entrepreneurs with a credible track record (exits, funded ventures, or operating businesses).
- Researchers and academics holding doctorates or comparable credentials.
- Specialists in fields where Portugal seeks to attract talent — technology, life sciences, finance, advanced manufacturing.
- Strong English (Portuguese is helpful but not initially required).
- Clean civil and tax records in all jurisdictions of prior residence.

Questions worth answering candidly.
Do I have to actually move to Portugal?+
No, you are not required to move to Portugal. Your collaboration can be done fully remotely or in person, at your own discretion. However, we strongly recommend visiting the country for at least one week per year.
How does this compare to the Golden Visa for citizenship?+
The naturalization clock is identical — ten years from initial card to citizenship eligibility under the 2026 amendment.
What about taxes?+
Please note that tax implications vary by individual. We advise consulting with a qualified tax advisor for detailed and personalized guidance.
Can my family come with me?+
Yes. Spouse and dependent children are included via family reunification. Their time in Portugal counts toward their own naturalization.
